Why is China opposing potential US strikes on Iran?

As reported by Global Times, following media reports that senior US officials are preparing for a possible strike on Iran in the coming days, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said that “China opposes any acts that violate the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, infringe upon the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of other countries, and opposes the use or threat of force in international relations.”

Guo further stressed that “the international community, especially influential major powers, should uphold an impartial stance and a responsible attitude, create conditions for promoting a ceasefire and returning to dialogue and negotiation, so as to prevent the regional situation from sliding into an abyss and triggering greater disasters.”

What did Xi Jinping say about Israel’s actions?

As reported by Reuters, in his first remarks regarding the crisis that broke out last Friday, Chinese President Xi Jinping stated two days ago that China is “deeply worried” about Israel’s military action against Iran, which has increased Middle East tensions.

China opposes any measures that violate the sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of other states, Xi said while addressing the sidelines of a meeting with five Central Asian countries in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.

Additionally, a few days ago, China’s Foreign Minister Wang held separate phone calls with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar on Saturday, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

He, during his discussion with Araghchi, highlighted China’s “clear condemnation” of

“Israel’s violation of Iran’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity,”

And voiced backing to Tehran in

“safeguarding its national sovereignty and legitimate rights.”

Iran’s Araghchi updated Wang on the latest developments, specifically condemning the attacks on nuclear facilities and warning that these actions could lead the entire region into a full-scale war.

Wang characterised Israel’s actions as a “violation” of the UN Charter and “the fundamental principles of international relations.” He claimed the strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities have set

“a hazardous precedent that could lead to devastating consequences.”
